Naledi-pryse wéér vanjaar omstrede met benoemings

Jan 16 2007 - Volksblad S.A

" Coupé, Around the world in 80 days, The coal yard en Black mamba is benoem as beste cutting edge-produksie, maar The shooting gallery (geskep deur Aryan Kaganof en Catherine Henegan) skitter in sy afwesigheid. Laasgenoemde was een van die opspraakwekkendste teater-ervarings van 2006 met ’n aweregse multimedia-aanslag. Wat ’n mens laat wonder wat die Naledi-paneel se definisie van cutting edge is . . ."

Best Dramas of 2006 - The Shooting Gallery

The Beeld Newspaper selected The Shooting Gallery as one of the best dramas seen in South African during 2006!

"One of the most innovative productions of the year was the Shooting Gallery by Aryan Kaganof and Catherine Henegan. Ten out of ten for The Market Theater's bold venture in supporting this kind of experimental work, which as it were, has created a new theatre genre."

THE SHOOTING GALLERY IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Shooting Gallery
was recently presented in South Africa at the National Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown and at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 11 July to 7 August 2006.

The South African version of the piece was conceived and directed by Catherine Henegan in collaboration with literary cult figure and pioneering digital filmmaker Aryan Kaganof. Renowned South African sound artist James Webb created an audio landscape for the piece.

Aided by a computer and a projection screen an editor (Henegan) tracks the way media constructs and reconstructs news and fiction. The protagonist is a war photographer (Kaganof) whose gruesome photos lead him into battle with his own conscience.

The premiere of the performance aroused much controversy and discussion on the South African National Arts festival. The show went on to perform 24 performances in Johannesburg at The Market Theatre.

This is what the press had to say:

This year’s National Arts Festival was thankfully not lacking in controversy. Catherine Henegan’s multimedia production,The Shooting Gallery, divided audiences like no other – some walked out, some gave standing ovations, others sat in stunned silence long after the play had ended. Probably the most ‘current’ art available on our stages, Catherine Henegan and Aryan Kaganof’s The Shooting Gallery is a searing work about many issues. There is a moment in a theatrical event such as The Shooting Gallery when art and reality meet. And for those moments at least confrontation of that reality helps to ease the burden of denial- Jay Pather Natal Mercury Download complete review

This production is not really a play. It could possibly be better described as post-modern reality theatre. But the best description, really, is simply that it’s a multi-media mind f**k. Light on literal spoonfeeding and heavy on symbolism, which is great as it gives the old grey matter a bit of a workout...it's an unusual way of making an anti-war statement, as well as probing journalistic ethics and the way media manipulates the public agenda. For those who like their theatre combined with left-of-centre art, music and poetry, The Shooting Gallery is stimulating theatre. It’s profoundly odd, but innovative and thought provoking. Be warned: this avant-garde fare will not be easy for those who like their entertainment served up in a fast-food polystyrene box.Christina Kennedy Theatre Vibe The Citizen Download complete review

Fake blood, coins up the arse, washing-up liquid as a lubricant to the backdrop of all kinds of images of gratuitous violence from contemporary media...come on! Aryan Kaganof and Catherine Henegan's The Shooting Gallery is in danger of being a dull has-been rather than the shockingly outrageous postmodern gesture it bills itself as. Kobus Burger Beeld Download complete review

For 30 years, The Market Theatre has presented revolutionary drama to theatre-goers and none could be more revolutionary than The Shooting Gallery. This is contemporary, current, off-the-cuff real live theatre. I am sitting in a theatre in this city confronted by the reality of this morning’s Israeli bombing attack on Beirut - feeling as if I have been transplanted to the front-line of the Middle East conflict. The play is adapted to the circumstances of the world of any given day – and it will leave you asking a lot of questions… Tom Jasiukowicz ACHE Download complete review

It is a collage of striking images and video, juxtaposed with Kaganof's physicality, which bombards the senses. Art meets conceptual theatricality and intellectualised art wins. Adrienne Sichel The Star
